Laugh of the day - midland transport

Sorry, I don't get it.
So if you don't have an account set up they will allow payment by credit card?
Am I missing something?

Visa

Same thing hapenned to us giving freight to Normandin Transit just before Christmas.
It was an urgent shipment and we had never sold them a load, although we had an oustanding balance with them for freight they had given us.

the bill was over $1500.00, we got Avion points on our Visa payment and I guess they had to pay 3% for the visa transaction.

So I guess it was a form of quick pay, at a lower rate than some brokers offer us.

To each his own!!!

Oh man... I wish I could demand payment by credit card from my customers... IMAGINE THE SAVED MAN HOURS, SAVINGS OVER LOSS REVENUE, LEGAL FEES! Imagine how easy it'd be to run a trucking company without millions of dollars on the books.

Just imagine.

Yes, they will allow you to pay by credit card and make you do so for the first shipment. What I was pointing out is that they didn't want a credit app or do what others ordinarily do in the course of business to establish an account, which is a little like asking Schneider National or General Motors to pony up a credit card if you're not set up with them. Her words were "we don't discriminate - it's the same for everyone". Evidently, they weren't set up as a carrier with us either and I am familiar with Midland from my work at other companies. I guess they've tightened the reins. I think there's a line between linearly asking for a credit card number and developing a relationship with a carrier.

I see your point NPB.
I think we are going to see more and more carriers accepting and demanding credit card or online payments.
It is not just the "credit risk" issue but also the cost involved in setting up an account for a one time shipment. Many companies ( not just trucking ) do not want all the administrative costs of setting up accounts for someone whose volumes may not warrent it.
If you are going to be shipping on a regular basis get ahold of a sales rep who will probably be happy to push it through for you.

We take visa & mastercard.

For some of the little ones that make you nervous or continually give you a hard time getting payment it a very good option.

It also allows us not to say "No" to a customer that may be going through a rough patch (hey, we all do - right?).

It allows us to say... "due to your recent credit patterns we've been forced to change your account details."

It works for us for the few accounts that we use it for.

Laugh of the day

Just called Midland Transport to get one of their trucks and was told if a company is not set up as a billable account at Midland Transport, you have to pay by VISA or MASTERCARD. LOL....yeah.

My opinion it is not a bad idea to have a prepaid for the service. Is like you go and buy fuel they will ask how are you going to pay for it before they even turn on the pump, for sure they would not let you leave the fuel pump without paying for it first or you will get the police after you. Should be better laws in Canada where to protect the carrier for not being paid for the services rendered and to be dragged for months or years through courts, lawyers, and so on...We had one case too where their credit was very risky and they prepaid us with a Comcheck before we even picked-up the freight. Not a bad idea at all save you a lot of headaches. We have already enough stress in this trucking industry why should have another one as far as payment issue.

I started taking VISA about 4 years ago and cut my hits by 80% easy. First times and guys I don't know, give me credit card or call the next guy. It helps slow guys catch up too, sometimes easier to give us a CC number then avoid us. It works so good that I started taking Mastercard too. It's not so much the quick pay aspect...it's the sure-pay aspect I care about

Comcheck Visa or M.C?

Yep, add us to the list, the 10 years I've been here we have had those three options above for those with out an account. Also cash. Always happy to take that too.

Its Visa or cash for me if you don't have an account. Welcome to the world of trucking where we pay diesel invoices daily

we will take payment by e-mail as well, you can send funds in Canada from your bank account to someone by e-mail then send them a seperate e-mail with password to deposit the e-mailed funds. Have heard some carriers only giving credit to brokers with a brokerage bond, no bond then broker must prepay with visa or other.

that prepay if no bond is a great idea!

and the email money thing hasn't worked for us as a company, yes as an individual but not a company, at least not through CIBC

We have electronic funds transfers for both our payables and our receivables. It has dramatically reduced our postage expense. We use bank of Montreal and so far, so good. The only snag is with cross border transfers. Smaller banks in small US cities and towns are not set-up to receive transfers from Canadian banks it seems.

yes EFT works, but it isn't as easy as an email, you need all the company's information before sending payment. in either case, paying ahead of time usually doesn't work well, it always seems to be a hassle.
