Trump imposes 50% tariffs on Canadian goods

So I went to Canadian Tire to purchase a sprayer. all the had were made in USA. Why can't we make our, and say made in Canada. WHY?

We sold ourselves to China years ago. Now we have an endless supply of imported garbage from them. USA products are generally pretty well built. Canada does not have a nozzle market or whatever worth starting a whole company dedicated to making sprayer nozzles. Who would we sell them to?
 
Canada's population is a tenth of that of the USA. We just don't have the consumption demand that the US offers.
Manufacturers in Canada used to thrive because 5 items:
  • lower labour rate
  • a higher labour efficiency rate - (we can produce more widgets faster).
  • lower overhead
  • lower corporate taxes
  • a weak CDN to US dollar
Case in point - the Ingersoll CAMI plant was noted as GM's most efficient automotive plant for all of GM for a number of years.

Then around 2015 came the issues. Inflation and wages jumped. Personal taxes took more of people's money and they demanded more from their employers. Woke sentiment and litigious legal challenges created strains for employers. COVID added a whole new level of grief. To top it all off, Canada received more and more containers from China through online sales as manufacturers got squeezed in all directions. Employers downsized and some left the market. The big US box stores of Walmart and HomeDepot squeeze the profits out of Canadian Tire and Home Hardware. The money is not staying in the country. Trump is just adding the topping to the cake. Canada manufactures have a hard time competing with globalism.

A very wise person said to me about 20 years ago, 'You cannot continue to demand a raise each year yet buy all your stuff at Walmart. It just won't work long term.'

He was so right.
