T4A moratorium officially lifted, CRA reports

Sounds good but how will they implement as we all know the rule breakers couldn't give two shits about the rules so what makes folks think they will comply here? They won't and if they get caught the card will be played. Same as the article yesterday bitching about enforcement in GTA on Driver Inc saying why here you are picking on us just and just because we deserve it we are playing the card. Like John Derringer said when asked why he robbed banks.. Because that is where the money is well GTA they are checking cause that is where the Driver Inc is..

Anyone know how this T4A thing works? As a broker, we hire carriers (not under contract and not employees), does this mean we have to issue T4A's to all the carriers we've worked with in 2025, big companies and small?

I spoke with someone at the CRA yesterday who said its for anyone we pay who doesn't have a GST/HST number, which narrows the list down to 0. He told me it was instituted more for carriers who are hiring 'owner/operators' instead of putting them on payroll (ie. Driver Inc.), but my accountant is interpreting it differently based on what is written on the gov't website. I'm thinking about calling back for confirmation but don't want to wait on hold for 1+hrs like I did yesterday.

Does anyone know for certain?

I just heard from my accountant about this as well. Now I'm reading your post, and comments from a CRA rep - which would be great, as then ours would also be 0, but wondering if that's true. Following along to see if anyone else chimes in with info/thoughts.

I think its for anyone who provides transportation services to you in the year 2025 as I read it.
As a broker, it would be for all carriers who provided transportation services to you in the year.

The someone at CRA is incorrect. You need the GST/HST number to put on the T4A. Yes, the concept was for payroll dodgers and Driver Inc but they didn't implement it that way. Your accountant is correct; the transportation broker needs to send a T4A to all Canadian carriers it paid over $500.00.

Here is the lastest - updated today.

Yeah, from my reading as well, I believe we'll have to file one for anyone we paid more than $500 in services for 2025.

Update - I called the CRA back the next day to see if what the first employee had said was correct. After another 1.5 hrs on the phone with the CRA speaking to a level 1 and level 2 employee, I was told that it needs to be completed for all carriers we paid over $500 last year. The 4th and final person I spoke with at the CRA said that the first gentleman I spoke with was incorrect as the GST/HST # for self reporting he was talking about ended January 29th of this year.

Inquired about issuing T4As to carriers who use factoring companies, and they had no idea. After explaining that to them I was put back on hold for them to investigate. Came back with a timid yes, we need to issue T4As to the carrier regardless of who we paid.

It's a horse and pony show right now.

Hello All

So checked with CRA and they confirmed this is for Internal company employees and Self Employed company people. Weird who sends T4A's to companies who invoice you and do one load a year for you if more than $500.

I just read this yesterday, thank goodness I am on this forum. How are people suppose to know about this. I never got an email , notice in the mail. Crazy.....

I assume CRA will try and match that up with what you are reporting and prob some other stuff to figure out who to audit

Can you imagine sending Trans force , Canada Cartage or any of the other big companies a T4A slip?

Yes, I mean, not sure what I'm supposed to do, we have a few hundred to issue - ugggh - and there are some big companies on there, to your point, what are they going to do with it? idk but we still have to issue to cover our butt

Just my opinion I would double check, triple check as you have a lot of work to do and CRA will most likely change it and all would of been done for no reason. Just my 2 cents

Ya agree 100% and am def doing that but so far, all signs point to I have to do it

A T4A slip in the trucking industry generally indicates income earned as an independent contractor or owner-operator (often in Box 048 for "fees for services") rather than a salaried employee. You must report this income on your tax return, usually on Form T2125, to deduct business expenses and pay income tax.

Punched in What do I do with a T4A slip I received on google. This is what came up.

My add to this discussion.

"We contacted CRA regarding this and were told: since we are a corporation and hire our own drivers that you are not required to issue a T4A for our company. We send invoices and those invoices are declared by you when you do your taxes. If you were hiring a trucking company that was only 1 driver who owns the company and also drives then a T4A would be necessary."
