Hello All

Is it common now after you give your carrier package and Insurance that they still request Drivers Name, Drivers License, Truck number Truck registration, Trailer number ?

Truck and trailer number and Drivers name dont have an issue with. But Drivers License and truck registration I will not send.

let me know first time I got this request.
P.S Wouldn't send so didn't get the load

I refuse to give all that information as well. It is their job to do a complete and thorough review of your information and confirm that it is correct, accurate and worthy of doing business with.
If the shipper wants to confirm that the carrier picking up the load matches the intended carrier that is supposed to pick up the load then that is fair. Make the driver sign a log to get in a door - fine, get the drivers name from that log entry.
But truck registration and drivers license info? Nope. What's next? SIN number, driver's total number of dependents, his shoe size? It's never ending the stuff these guys think will help them avoid the catastrophe that might happen because they cannot take the proper time to identify who they're doing business with.

The more information that flows out of your hands into someone else's hands is more information that someone can use to steal your identity.

US broker?

I have come across this with customers shipping "high target" items (electronics, energy drinks etc.), things that are easy for thieves to move on the black market.

I've always told the shipper(s) that it limits capacity for me as many carriers will not reveal this information... and I get it... I do.

Myself as a broker the right thing to do is... 1. Not give this to a new carrier. 2. Before any conversation about rate, pick up time, appointments or anything else... tell your carrier what the shipper requires first.

No sense stringing someone along and then dropping this on them.

For those carriers that are not throwing their drivers details out there... Bravo.

I got strung along. Sent carrier package, agreed on price, send Insurance naming them and the its oh our policy is this and if you dont supply we cannot do business. Then got even more mad when I told them their on our do not use list

Ya this has become common practice in the US.

Honestly, with US carriers. You book a load with them and they just send all that info because they are so accustomed to it.

super annoying. I get asked for the driver's phone number all the time so I say they are private number and cannot get given out. People just don't understand and feel they are entitled. same with POD's. as soon as its delivered, load brokers are hot to get the POD within a millisecond of delivery.

I had one carrier pester me consistently the other week for a trailer and truck number. Why?! why doesnt it matter?!

As a broker the only time we would ask for the drivers # is if it's after hours usually.
Or if the dispatch communication is terrible, in which case they will likely never get a load again.

Twice in two days. Both with yankee brokers we've worked with for years. License plate, VIN# all kinds of stuff.

I can only speak about what my company does. Anytime we request a drivers name or phone number is when we are asked for it by our customer. In almost all of those cases the delivery/pick up is either after hours, at an unmanned facility or involves a government or restricted access location. I fully understand and appreciate the privacy concerns involved and the problems that can arise when a drivers number can potentially be abused. A truck or trailer number is a different story. That information is required to help prevent double brokering and to insure that the carrier accepting our load is the same one showing up to load it.

This isn't a new thing. I remember 30 years ago when I was on the operations side a lot of the US brokers would do this. At the time I would sometimes take loads for our trucks from RFX, Alliance, Joe Land (remember them), Allen Lund. The ones that had Canadian offices didn't do it though.

So just had a call with trucker tools (with load link now) and their tracking required the drivers #/truck#
obviously not super common yet in Canada but in the US its a big thing for compliance, no tracking = no load, especially with fraud issues happening.

As a broker our customers are looking for this, they want to see the truck dot moving on the map. Would save me time not having to constantly call/email to ask about the location but I just don't know how many carriers will give out their drivers #'s in order to get the load. Not sure if this is an option here yet but realistically the more people who want it the more it will be accepted.

Out of all of my direct customers, none have requested to see the dot moving on the map. When push comes to shove, and things are getting tight, they call here and we look at the dot on the map and let them know that everything will be ok. Only my staff will know if this driver is the type of driver to make it from that dot location to the ultimate location in the time expected, especially if there are weather, HOS, or other issues at play. Customers are usually widget makers, and they have no time to do my business. They focus on theirs; we focus on ours.
In my opinion, it's the broker in the middle, who has been burned and trusts no one, and has put in the policy that they want to be able to see the dot on the map so they won't be burned or at least they should know moments before the ultimate customer has figured it out. That and the fact that there is an oversupply of trucks available to take loads so they can push their weight around. Wait for the tide to turn, when there are no trucks, and loads sitting. The policy will go out the window like the cigarette butt in the car ahead of you and for some reason the guy on the other side of the phone can make that decision.

We denied another large US broker yesterday to set us up on their mandatory HIGHWAY ELD tracking and somehow today they came back to us and said, 'hey, we've been working together for 20 years, this is not a requirement for you'. Small win for me this time.

The smarter accounts ask for very little. Their data mining starts the minute the truck arrives at their gate.. cameras record everything ..my shipper and I see the truck I hired as it arrives.. I see what the driver of the truck looks like.. I get a full scan of the truck from all sides and top as well. AI helps to filter and alert whoever needs to be alerted in the event of a problem. I never ask for a driver's name.. and if I wanted that all I'd have to do is wait until he/she gates out and it will be in the order for me to see... along with all the stats on the truck. Shippers also record all of a driver's movements while on shipper property...under the guise of liability. It's the world we live in now, for better or worse.
