Unpaid truck drivers urge federal lawmakers to reform industry

The membership here has been talking about this for several years now. People want to work in an environment where they can skirt the system, not pay taxes, etc. then they want the government to help them get paid from their sketchy employers. Live by the Driver Inc, die by the Driver Inc. You can't have your cake and eat it too. Go work for a reputable company that will pay you fairly, but also keep up WSIB, source deductions and for fuck sakes pay your taxes like the rest of us...

Good luck,
Mike

While I am sure there were a large number of these drivers who willingly and knowingly accepted working with the Driver Inc template, I can’t help but think a certain number were duped into accepting it by unscrupulous employers. If a company owner was willing to skirt Canadian tax laws, then screwing over a fellow countryman would be an easy step to take in his quest for profit at any cost. Let’s face it, if someone tells you that you will make more money by doing X as opposed to Y, guess which one an inexperienced, new arrival will take, especially when it is being explained to you in your native tongue by perhaps someone from the same city as you back home? Lots of pain, blame and suffering to go around here, but not all of it is self inflicted. Those are the real victims in this tragedy.

If one were to be duped into this situation you still owe it to yourself to look into the situation and fully understand what you have signed up for. No matter where you're from or what situation you have gotten yourself into you still should identify the problem and fix it. Don't let it fester. There are plenty of resources available and in all different languages, who have brought up the Driver Inc. model with its pros and cons.

I believe that all of those drivers that utilize Driver Inc, including those who have been duped, want to continue this model. It's so prevalent that we are forced to advise new driver applicants 3 times that we do not offer Driver Inc., will not in the future, and you will be considered an employee who will be subject to applicable payroll source deductions. We still have people go through the whole process only for them to try and convince us before they go out on their first trip - what a waste of time for all of us.

The reality is that nobody - not an employee, not a vendor or even a friend will continue to do work without getting paid. If you were told you would receive x for doing y, and you don't receive x, why would you continue? Why would you wait until thousands of dollars are owed? I've had some prospective drivers tell me they haven't been paid in over TWO MONTHS but please pay me Driver Inc because I need the money now and do you do advances? 'Aahh - no', is my response.

Going out with signs and asking the government for change is fruitless. Band together, identify which carriers are screwing over the Driver Inc. employees, let everyone know and leave that carrier if you find that you are working with them because it's only a matter of time when it happens to you. That is the only way to get change.
