A Chatham man locked the brakes on his westbound vehicle east of the city Saturday night after spotting a transport truck heading toward him on Highway 401.

Peter Zubyk, Sun Media sales representative, was westbound on the freeway, heading home to Chatham, when he saw the headlights of the eastbound truck coming right at him.

“It was a scary moment,’’ recalled Zubyk. “The truck came way too close for comfort.’’

Zubyk immediately dialed 911 and the OPP to report the incident and said OPP quickly responded to the scene.

“I saw the set of headlights heading towards me from an angle on Highway 401,’’ he said.

A 26-year-old Toronto truck driver has been charged with careless driving and driving the wrong way on Highway 401.

Officers located and stopped the vehicle which was still travelling eastbound on the westbound shoulder of the freeway.

Officers spoke with the driver and determined that he had crossed the centre median of the highway.

This "driving the wrong way" scenario happens alot in Germany. So much that a term was created for it - "ghost driver". People call in to local police and radio stations often advising motorists of a "ghost driver" being spotted - where this can be seriously dangerous if on the autobahn.

Tourists usually - get caught up in round-a-bouts getting on and off the highways in certain parts of Germany. Having family there and visiting a few times now - I have seen this first hand - pretty scary when you're the one in a mini van doing 180km's and getting passed like we are standing still - then throw a car coming in your direction to the mix....yikes....
