Nothing new here. This is like Lucky Strike cigarettes saying "It's Toasted". The monitoring patent is simply for their own code but every responsible telematics vendor would have something similar, or possibly better given the lateness of this announcement.
In Machine to Machine (M2M) mobile communications, anyone can establish an APN (Access Point Name) with their cellular carrier and gain access to performance monitoring and alerts.
The hardware installed in the truck contains firmware that tells the hardware what details are gathered and sent (like GPS location, speed, RPM, hardware health info, etc), and how often it is sent. Modern equipment uses cellular data just like your smartphone. It hits a node at the carrier, then goes out to the web and your secure account. This process takes only a few seconds and its really simple to monitor if you have the right people taking care of your account.
