Calling municipal speed cameras a “cash grab,” Ontario premier Doug Ford announced that his government will introduce legislation next month that will ban their use across the province. The premier […]

I agree these should be in school zones. But when you go through areas and its 30 km then its 50 km then its 40 km. Who can keep their vehicle at the exact speed without constantly staring at the odometer and not the road. This is distracted driving in its worst form! Also hate the fact that in a month i am getting a ticket for 4 km over and paying $20 plus VFS plus $8.25 in MTO Search. I figure 4 km over your around $30-35 bucks. The worst thing I hate is it goes to the owner not the driver so basically shut up and pay. They always leave out if you have a CVOR you also get the points as it goes to the owner!

How the Charge is Determined
  1. The Set Fine:
The primary component of the fine is calculated per kilometre over the speed limit, with higher rates for greater speeds, according to Schedule D of the Highway Traffic Act.
    • 1-19 km/h over: $5.00 per kilometre.

    • 20-29 km/h over: $7.50 per kilometre.

    • 30-49 km/h over: $12.00 per kilometre.

    • 50 km/h or more over: $19.50 per kilometre.
  2. Victim Fine Surcharge (VFS):
A VFS is added to the total and credited to the provincial victims' justice fund. This amount varies based on the size of the set fine.

  3. MTO Search Fee:
A $8.25 fee is also added to cover the municipality's cost of obtaining the owner's information from the Ministry of Transportation.

Fines for driving under 5 km over seem absurd, as well as the charge for MTO search.
But you own the car and authorize who drives it, so that point doesn't stand out as a reason to eliminate them.

Yeah, the driver doesn't matter with red light cameras either. Whoever is the owner will be charged. They don't have time to try and do FBI work to locate the identity of the driver lol

The cameras have been excessive lately and not just here, but i've noticed more and more in Europe as well. Good source of govt revenue whilst claiming they reduce accidents and maintain privacy.

I got fined going through a community safety zone in Aberfoyle back in April..I was doing…hold on to your hats..58 km/hr in a 50 zone. I thought I could fight it, but the nice lady arbitrator wouldn’t budge, but she was nice so I didn’t push it. $83. In all fairness though, I was speeding, albeit not egregiously. The cameras are effective.. used to be that people bombed through there doing 70..but go through now and if you’re doing 55 you’re passing everyone.

I know a guy that got dinged there about 4/5 seperate times. It's a sneaky one because it's up on a light post and not a grounded box speed camera like the others.

“Cash grab”???? Aren’t all sources of government revenue a “cash grab” in one way or another? Retired folks having to pay income taxes when they are barely getting by on CPP, OAS, and GIS plus some meager savings, and this after they worked and paid income taxes their entire lives. Now that’s a cash grab. And don’t get me started on the markups the LCBO gets away with….cash grab…Dougie is the king of cash grabs! At least photo radar is proven to improve road safety.

I wouldn’t mind getting in on that business. Let’s say ten cameras set up around town.. send the government their cut and the rest is mine less the cost and upkeep of the cameras.
