I for one don't want to see it squashed, we have invested alot of monies in equipment and training to meet this regulation. It's a great feeling going to bed at night knowing that your driver is playing by the rules.

Let's do the math - ELD's become law - trucks lose say 15% efficiency and rates go up 20 to 30% - do I want to run illegal and make X at the end of the week on crappy rates or run legal and make the same X on higher rates and ran legal and a lot less wear and tear on the equipment.

That can only be a positive thing.
Some time ago in another post I alluded to something my drivers had learned running across the west. There is a certain segment of Canadian based carriers that are paying their drivers minimum wage to run Toronto/Vancouver. How it's done is you run Toronto/Vancouver on your PCMiler and it shows how many driving hours the trip takes. Those drivers were being paid minimum wage for those driving hours !!!!
Carriers making money off the backs of their drivers.
These are the very same carriers that want to do away with the ELD, which brings to light how badly they are cheating their drivers.
My personal belief is that our drivers should share in our successes. Always in the back of minds should be the undeniable fact that if we don't have drivers, we can't do business. Doesn't matter where you land in the supply chain, you cannot avoid that one simple fact.

It happens, I've seen it and spoke to drivers who are on the receiving end of it. I've spoken to teams, where a driver tells me he's making .22 cpm, which isn't great but to add to that he tells me that it's for the miles HE drives, not the truck. These drivers are recruited before coming to Canada or just after arriving. They "trust" these companies are being fair to them. Some people have no problem taking advantage of others.

^^^^ ... and maybe some of them would not be so rude and bitter if they were actually making a proper wage. Certainly would give them cause to change their life philosophy of "everyone is out to get me" if they were treated with the same respect given to other drivers.
