So I sent an email to the Honorable Minister John Baird asking why the gov. of Canada doesn't adopt a system like the US when it comes to transportation by licensing carriers and brokers of freight, and making sure everyone was legit.
His response was:
Dear Mr. XXXXXXXX:
I am writing in response to your correspondence of June 18, 2009, regarding rules and regulations applying to freight forwarders operating in Canada.
Please note that under the Motor Vehicle Transport Act and the Conditions of Carriage Regulations, responsibility for regulating extra-provincial motor carrier undertakings, including the type, amount and conditions of insurance and bonding coverage required, has been delegated by agreement to the provincial/territorial governments. As such, I have taken the liberty of forwarding a copy of your e-mail to the Honourable Ron Lemieux, Manitoba's Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation, for consideration.
Since the issue of Canada-United States international freight movements falls more directly within the purview of the Canada Border Services Agency, I have provided a copy of your correspondence to the Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister responsible for the Agency. For more information, you may wish to consult the Agency's website.
Thank you for sharing your concerns with me.
Sincerely,
John Baird, P.C., M.P.
c.c. The Honourable Peter Van Loan, P.C., M.P.
The Honourable Ron Lemieux, M.L.A.
So, they download everything to the provinces and when it comes to cross border issues, its the provinces fault...
Anyone else see a problem with this or am I the only one thinking this is a really stupid idea from the Government of Canada?
