It doesn't take much to make people happy. People (I'd like to think) naturally fall towards the happy side of life - rather than the doom & gloom. We find that everywhere now...the doom & gloom that is. It's in our face in the media...it's what we talk or gossip about...it's in overheard conversations. Everywhere...and at times...can be hard to escape. That's where "the little things" come into play...and why they matter....
Today - the first day back after a nice long weekend...a customer bought our office lunch. Yes...I said customer. He called on Friday and asked if I could handle taking care of this. I was a little surprised to say the least and asked the reason for such a nice gesture. He advised our dispatch really helped him out back in December with some loads - took care with his freight and went the "extra mile" where we could. Therefore he wanted to "thank us" all for a job well done. A job we are supposed to be doing everyday...but today...there was that "little extra" that came our way.
Needless to say the Chinese food was delicious. We all enjoyed it. And it was a nice treat for the first day back - traditionally a really busy day for all dispatchers. Now did this customer need to do this? Certainly not. Will this gesture go a long way with our staff? You betcha'. A little gesture...which cost $100 - sure went a long way to making some folks happy. And they'll look at this customer in a new way going forward.
So folks...the little things really do matter...in a good & positive way. I posted this so you'd all give something "little"...a little more consideration. Do what you can...when you can...for those you feel deserve that little 'extra'. I guarantee you'll receive those gestures back. From good people...who feel you deserve it too.
