Human rights complaint - news

From the conversations I've had with carrier operations, and feel free to speak up about this. Don't the senior employees (drivers) get to pick their regular routes ahead of the newbies? So, if the senior drivers in a company want the shorter haul runs in order to be home with their families it's because they have put in years of service to earn that right.
Conversely, if the senior drivers want the long haul runs in order to rack up larger amounts of miles the newer employees would have a complaint that they are held to the shorter haul lanes.

It has nothing to do with existing Canadian versus new Canadian and everything to do with putting in your dues.

Definitely agree on the seniority part but realistically do you think that's the reason for mistreatment? Abuse and bullying have been going on since the inception of the TFW program, the program is a shit show and that's why we dont personally participate. I have however worked in firms that bring foreign workers and have seen the BS that happens and it is a real concern and frankly inhumane. Truckers are already underappreciated as it is and then you add this living in fear of having to go back home or tolerate a shitty work environment shouldn't be something anyone should have to worry about being new to Canada or being born here. Trucking is a safety-sensitive career and I sure as hell wouldn't want my family to share the roads with someone who is disgruntled and overworked. Also, another thing, a lot of our TFW positions are misrepresented by immigration agents here and in the market overseas, being out for days job duties and "resets" are not explained properly or even mentioned as it is not a thing where most of these guys are already driving.


A few years back Harlens Trucking in Surrey was fined a large sum for misrepresentation and underpaying.

100% abuse and bullying can't be tolerated be it towards Canadian or non Canadian employees. It's sickening to read that there is potential for the employer to take advantage strictly because the employee could not go elsewhere for employment.

Part of that article included dispatchers allegedly forcing drivers to break HOS rules to get to a delivery on time. I can't understand how anyone would force a driver to do that. Customers understand the rules of the road, and if not, they need to be educated as such.

Recently, I was given a ETA for a weekend delivery (for an LTL), I arranged my forklift guy to come on the weekend and all. At the time of pickup it was discovered that the driver didn't in fact have hours to make it and my delivery would be Monday morning. My only reply could be and sure was: "we'll be ready when the driver arrives safely Monday morning."

Anyway, this will be investigated and dealt with if applicable. It's tough to make judgement on an article that presents only a snippet of the whole story.

This is about as far as this can go. Shameful behavior from the trucking company if true, however I do hear that drivers tend to exaggerate things occasionally, sometimes.
