How do you verify a Broker isn't trying to double broker you?

Hello, something I was curious on:

For Double Brokering: where a Fraudulent Broker gets a load, gives it to a Carrier. Then, doesn't pay the real Carrier after it's done.

From the perspective of a Carrier, why is this possible to occur?

Could you not simply ask the shipper, which carrier is actually meant to be delivering the load ?

The seems to be quite prevalent which really intrigues me.

Curious if anyone faced this before & how you prevent it.

A few things in no particular order:

Verify the broker's address and business. This means checking on trade references from the company. A business that has done only 1 shipment with a broker doesen't qualify as a trade reference. An address that is actually a UPS store or a Purlator store would raise a red flag for me.

Checking the actual paperwork once you pick up a shipment. A lot of paperwork, if done correctly will list the proper broker or party in the BOL if there is a party where third party billing is to be addressed to.

Personally, if another broker that is actually a carrier asks me to clear a shipment under their PAPS/PARS, is a red flag for me. Asking to ID to shipper/receiver as their company instead of yours.

People with incomplete email signatures (will not post full name, address, office/cell numbers, etc.).

Looking the company up here, reviewing the comments accordingly.

Paying attention to the rate being offered. If the rate seems too good to be true, just be wary.

Overall trusting your own gut, probably left a few things out of here.

I appreciate the fact that you're asking how to prevent this.

However, the sleuth in me is not going to reveal my secrets for vetting carriers to a "screen name" and recent new member to this group.

For all I know... you could be a double broker who recently got caught and are looking for tips and tricks at how to be a better crook.

Whenever I decline a carrier and they ask why... my standard answer is "You don't meet out criteria" and that's all they're going to get from me.

I had a similar thought about revealing vetting techniques on the other DB post from @Hengbin

Maybe @Hengbin is a DB trying to outsmart everyone, maybe @Hengbin is legitime, just new to the industry. Many of us are anonymous on this forum, you never know.

Maybe I'm the Real Slim Shady but the odds are I'm just some schmuck pimping freight

It is rare that you will get a double brokered load from an actual broker, its usually from a carrier.

Lol, completely makes sense I look suspicious. I'm not wondering about vetting techniques,

The only thing I'm curious on, the topic of double checking...

Situation:

1. ABC Carrier goes to pickup / deliver the load... asks to know the person on the loading docks whose supposed to be coming.

2. They say "XYZ carrier is meant to come."

3. ABC Carrier realizes they're being double brokered and leaves, adjusts accordingly.

Issue solved?

If anyone knows anything on why this doesn't solve all the issues, please let me know.
