True but painful answer is: drivers don't stick together and stand up for each other.
If one refuses cheap freight, bad working conditions, etc. there are thousands of others who are willing to "take it" no matter the cost.
 
The most powerful people are the ones who can do the jobs that the fewest number of people can. Not the other way around unfortunately.
 
Yes Michael, back in the days of "many nails, one hammer" The Teamsters did a good job of giving truck drivers some power. Unfortunately, they took it a little too far and forced many of the carriers that their members worked for into bankruptcy. (de-regulation also helped).
It would be interested to see the number of members the Teamsters has now compared to back in their glory days. I am guessing their numbers are down by about 80%.
