Hey guys sorry if this is the wrong subsection!

Hoping to get everyone's opinion on this, maybe I am misunderstanding

A lot of carriers and load pimps are using HIGHWAY to connect to people who will do loads for them.
Bison and Cat have both told me they will not be able to use our company if we do not integrate our ELD with highway
On the set up it says they will verify our equipment and "recent activity"

I've always asked for clarification because no one can quite explain why the integration is needed or how it will be used.

Am I misunderstanding or is it exactly what it looks like and they can have access to go look at all of our companies ELD's?
Has anyone done this?

Highway will have visibility of all your ELD devices 24/7. They will poll your ELD provider on a regular basis to get every GPS datapoint created by each and every one. Make no mistake, if you proceed with allowing this connection, all your sensitive data will be in the hands of Highway' AI bots to do what they will and the possibilities are endless.
  • They will be able to match the carrier's GPS positions with a broker's load sheet to see exactly where the pickup and delivery is.
  • They will be able to see all your own customers pickup and delivery locations. Carrier A loads out of this location 12 times per week and we do not have it linked with a broker on our side. We are selling this to the highest bidder.
  • They will be able to see and report if you're efficient with your fleet and could possibly report this to their customers(brokers).
  • They will be able to tell their customers if your exact truck that just got put on a load was in the shop 6 times in the last 2 months.
  • They will be able to sell the Brokers information to potential new brokers. Just imagine - Broker A ships out of this location 12 times per week. Do you want the address Broker B?
This is not by mistake. Data is king in this AI world and Highway is exploiting the opportunity. Remember, the carrier pays Highway nothing and therefore Highway does not have a business relationship or any fiduciary duty to protect the information they acquire from a carrier. Highway can sell this information to the highest bidder without recourse. Highway can sell the linked and derived information it creates by linking Broker supplied data and carrier data, and nobody would be able to prove it unless the scumbag buyer admits to it.

I get it, brokers are dying out there because of bad actors, stating they are carriers, are stealing their freight. Highway may be a good tool to source data from numerous brokers on weather a carrier is legit or not, or have negative occurrences, but the collection of the ELD data is another level.
I can agree if it is just RMIS version 2 reborn but the ELD is a hard no.

SAY NO TO HIGHWAY AND THE COLLECTION OF YOUR SENSITIVE ELD DATA.

Its not as bad as it seems, and although Jim has a few valid points from a point of view of both carrier and broker we find a lot of value in Highway. They are among the most advanced in Fraud prevention.

We have noticed a huge trend in carriers from Alberta specifically, booking shipments for their friends. Highway helps us prevent it since we see exactly where each carrier is located ( as long as their ELD is setup). Highway also puts together a very detailed profile about carriers, with insurance, equipment, inspections. Not sure where repairs fall into place, never seen equipment maintenance there, but that would also be very good to know.

Again Im just tell you my opinion, like everything else in this world, unless you are doing something sketchy there shouldnt be a reason to be concerned. On the other hand, Data and privacy are a real concern for many - and I totally see where they are coming from.

Like I said, RMIS version 2 is fine. Collecting and reporting on the carrier profile is not the issue here. A carrier with less than desirable metrics should be identified. Crowd sourcing a carrier's reputation is also that comes with the territory of HIGHWAY. Should someone post that Carrier XYZ double brokered it should be available to the other users of HIGHWAY. Once again, I have no issues with this.

My issue is the collection of every data point, 24/7, from every ELD in the fleet weather it pertains to a brokered load or not. There is way too much data there that can be gleamed and misconstrued as something that it is not. That is where I was going with the maintenance. Let's say you book my truck 1234 but HIGHWAY has tracked it as being in the shop quite a bit over the previous month, that may sway your opinion in a negative way that may be now irrelevant. That is where I was going with your (the broker) data. Now HIGHWAY knows where the carrier is picking up and delivering and how often. Do you want someone else to know that Carrier XYZ is pickup up at SHIPPER X 12 times per week? Do you want them to potentially share that with other brokers?

I'm also not a big fan of HIGHWAY requiring the personal address of all my employees. Currently my employees routinely need to take a selfie and snap a picture of their driver's license to login. If they block the personal address with a post-it they get denied login. Not cool at all.

The privacy statement is so terribly vague that they can get away with selling any data and the carrier, the HIGHWAY customer, the broker or anyone would not be able to prove that the data is gone. Even if it was specifically stated I wouldn't trust it.

We use Highway.

I will say the data is collects is extreme. And there is no way to by pass it.

If I was to send Jim a load or a few other members on this site, I would just send it to him if I could. I couldn't care less about his ELD/tracking or anything. I know it's going to be in good hands.

However, the US domestic market is truly on fire when it comes to fraud and that is 90% of my business. Highway has saved me from countless problems by flagging problems early with bad actors.

It's been worth every penny.

I have been successful in convincing some brokers to allow me to be setup without the requirement of ELD tracking. It is an option that most brokers, or should I say the employee booking the load, does not know about.
@Fr8Guru do you know that ELD is an option? Are you ok with HIGHWAY gleaming the specific point to point data from the carriers you use and possibly selling your load details to a 3rd party? Would you set someone up without the need for ELD if you had a business relationship or had a face to face meeting (like in the good ol days)?

I don't have a choice in 99% of cases. We are too big and the mandate is Highway or nothing. In very specific circumstances, we've been able to by-pass, but its not the norm.

But absolutely, I'd love to be able to go with a handshake. I had a 1% situation occur last week where we set up a local Moncton carrier who helped with a cross dock. Everything was handled, load delivered before any paperwork was complete.
