Good ol' Howard at Grizzly Endeavours has resurfaced with a DAT account showing Matawan NY but phone and fax numbers being the same at 416-927-8485 and no additional contact information.

Anyone who has an "in" with Link as far as notifying them of non-payers and scam artists will want to alert them that DAT has yet again given a Canadian company a DAT account (DAT is supposed to refer Canadians to Link and vice versa for US-based companies.) The fact that Howard has a 416 area code phone number and the same name that surely is blacklisted at Link (I am assuming here) should have been a clue for DAT to not open the account.

Block this guy and proceed with caution.

Matter of opinion

I have known HOWARD for over 30 years. I really don't care what is posted here on a website. I drove for him, hauled for him and still occasionally do and always have been paid on what we agreed.

Heed what noproblembuddy says members... Howard is bad, bad, bad news. Someone here once made the stupid mistake of giving him some of our freight. The bottom line...

* 10 days late on delivery
* 1 lost customer
* Paid for the freight twice
* More frustration than any operations department ever deserves

* A learning experience... priceless

Howard

I guess it's like a lot of people out there - some have good experiences and some don't. Grizzly brokers its freight so I would surmise that it was whomever Grizzly brokered the stuff out to was late but I wasn't there so I can't say for sure. It seems to me while this website is useful for some info - there seems to be a consensus of holier than thou people on here that seem to do no wrong have never hauled a cheap load and always pay on time. Wow - I sure would like to have some of the high dollar freight they talk about and always be paid on time. Please feel free to message me I would be quite happy to haul your freight anywhere in Canada. My Opinion.

Hiwaykw05,

For your information - strictly as a new contributing member on this site - you will quickly get to know some members and hopefully come to appreciate their time, posts and worthwhile contributions to this forum which benefit us all...

But more specifically I hope you come to see why hard work, dedication, attention to credit scores, making on time payments and cheap freight refusal simply make these members - as you note - "holier than thou". They certainly deserve this title. And that is just my opinion....

I fully agree with your comment.
As a carrier we are very careful with our receivables. Over the years, we have developed good relationships with several freight brokers, we provide quality service for a reasonable price.

I believe we manage to get top dollar for our services. We seldom run into the situation whereupon we must look for freight in the last minute, thus are not often subject to low ball rates be it from carriers or brokers.

We have set rates and do not deviate from them, thus protecting our existing base of freight brokers.

"HOWARD" - in parentheses because his real name is Sheldon has been around forever and has changed the company name like we change shoes. It was never because he didn't pay anyone ... it's more a thing with communication and compliance.

He has guys running what you call 'gypsy' for him -- meaning no regard for the laws/regulations. Makes it tough on regulators to audit him and once they close in ... he re-opens under another name.

If you've ever been to his place, you'll know what I mean.

The Man, are you saying that this "Howard" fellow is indeed Sheldon Langer?????( or whatever last name he went by). Your last remark about the state of his office sure leads me to believe that it is. My goodness, the Sheldon I am referring to has been around for years, so many in fact, that I would have thought he had passed on to that big truck stop in the sky by now.

What about his other alias Gerald, anyone know him by that? Just called his office and asked for Sheldon, he hung up. LOL

Howard

First things first. The term "gypsy" was at one time an honoured thing in this business because it was us gypsies that turned this industry around from the days of the PCV to derugulation. We were the ones that found ways to be truly independent and have our own names on our doors to set our own rates and haul for whom we wanted to. Yes there were a lot of laws broken but sometimes that's just the way it has to be.

As for the man's health - he is getting up in the years and is as good as he used to be. If some of you have been around long enough you will remember he was the first one to BROKER freight in Ontario. I realize that a good number of you weren't even in the buisness back then but I was and I remember proudly being called a "gypsy". I do value the opinions of others and keeping things on the up and up. It's still my name on the door and my authority and I have a good rating from the DOT because I keep things legal. My Opinion.

hiwaykw05,
Thanks for the history lesson. It should provide a useful perspective for the newer entrants into this wonderful business of ours to contemplate.

Activet, very well said, especially when your tongue is so firmly planted in your cheek! Hiwaykw05, I think you will find many members on this site that can remember the "good old days" that you speak of, but times have changed and a successful business has to be able to change with them.

Good old days

Loaders I'm sure you are correct about the members of this forum - some of them being around back then. It's always fun to get together and talk about the GOOD old days. I agree times have changed and I have changed with them. Hell my trucks are so legal I almost make myself sick somedays - LOL. But I still love this buisness after 32 years and will continue to truck until they won't let me. I think perhaps I still haul the occasional load for HOWARD just out of loyalty and a reminder of what once was. Kind of makes you appreciate what is. My Opinion.

I have been around long enough to know that 'gypsy' was not a derogatary term at the time when it was more common.

But because of how laws have changed, how information flows now compared to 'those good old days', and the increased service expectations of customers, the times when one could grow a successful business in the way that Sheldon did it are pretty much over. Obviously he still has some fans, but once he's gone, don't expect a new generation like him.

A little known fact -- he's actually a tenor, although probably not any more as he is pretty old.

The Good Old Days

Yes I know him quite well. I drove for him back in the days when we were on Britannia Rd and had all the old Goodyear trailers. He is getting up there - the health isn't as good as it used to be but you still have to get up pretty early to be ahead of him lol.

I once took a load from Howard. We didn't get paid from him and had to go to the shipper. They referred me to another broker in the states who did pay me but not until I called his bonding company. That broker got burned by Howard.

I would recommend not using this company. We dont'.

We did 2 local calls for Grizzly back in 2009. We agreed on Direct Deposit COD. I fax the invoice to him, and he would do DD that day.

May 27/09- paid June 3/09
June 3/09- paid June 22/09.

Not really "that day" afterall.
