just wanted to share that we just got hit up for a load by Northern Gateway Transportation in Laval QC (also listed as 9428-7224 quebec in) There was some things that just didn't sit right when doing a credit check and then found this:

Just wondered if there is any current information for this customer... ? Called for a rate today

Ohh do I have a story to tell. They quoted T/L rate to BC, picked up the freight. Next morning, updated truck location in Thunder Bay, seemed odd as it was a solo and load picked up at 3pm. Few hours later, called, did a credit check and unfortunately our rating isn't adequate so they need payment up front. Didn't sound right, for obvious reasons. Looked through the cameras and seen the carrier that picked up, local carrier, called the company, they advise they took it to a cross dock. Called the cross dock, yup freight is sitting on their dock. Send our truck in to recover the freight. Paid the Cross dock fees. Called Northern, Tony & Frank, both not legit names, confirm freight is on "their" truck in Thunder Bay. Asked how that was possible as it was currently on my truck heading back to my dock. Exchange of not so professional words. This was a great learning experience for our junior account managers, the importance of FOLLOWING PROCEEDURES for vetting carriers, one short cut can lead to a very expensive mistake. The point here... as the economy softens, it's important that we ALL take our time, vet the carriers and watch for those scammers out there.

ohhhhh... so I would have played out the whole scene ... send tracking / driver cell / when do you want appt / etc... would have been interseting

Come for holiday too, I've got guest quarters. Come after the snow goes and before the mosquitoes come. There's a 2 week window in June...
The fresh air, 15 minutes to go anywhere you want and daylight past 10PM in the summer will make it hard to leave here.

Keep well,
Mike

Situations like this are priceless when it comes to teaching new members of your staff what really can happen when you take a shortcut. You were fortunate that there was minimal cost involved. Maybe post a few of these “close calls” up on the walls in dispatch so they are front and centre for everyone to see and be reminded of.

Snow up too your eyeballs and 40 below tell me different. But good on you glad you like it up there.

Heya Rob,

It's 1 degree right now and the less than a foot of snow is melting. There's some coming but I think it'll be mostly mixed precip tonight and tomorrow.

Funny, you get used to the cold pretty easy, I'm out in a t-shirt when I shovel down to -10 or so after being here 2 years. :) Matthew plays in the snow no matter how cold it gets, he literally doesn't care about the cold.

Keep well sir and Merry Christmas!

Exactly the same thing just happend to us. They picked up a load out of Montreal area going to BC. Once picked up they asked to pay in advance. Since we refused they decided to hijack our load and said they stopped the truck in Thunder Bay. With the help of the police and the license plate of the truck, we found out who the carrier was and where he dropped the load in the GTA. We sent another carrier and were able to retreive the load but we had to pay around 750$ to the yard to get reloaded. I'd like to get your procedure to help our team avoiding this in the future, if it's ok with you. Thanks
