I would have donated again, but I will less likely do so

There never has been a SUPPORTER banner on your membership.

If there was a donation made it should have been directed to ADMIN and your account updated accordingly.

Please advise if this is the case.

I think that AR@DRC is only trying to solicit donations for what we all believe to be a very beneficial site. If each of the more active posters were to donate $10.00 each, the monthly total would be easily exceeded. Just like our own accounts receivable, they start asking nicely and then get progressively more forceful. Like Mike Jr says, this site has saved me money and at a much lower cost than D&B or Creditel and with more current, first hand information. Geez, just skip a couple of trips to Tim's and donate that money!

Thanks loaders. This is exactly the case here. And no one ever likes the one looking for donations or money - but someone has to do it...

Inside Transport is not a money making site - just in need of the basic costs covered. Why should anyone be out of pocket to keep all of us here? Makes no sense at all...

Mike,

I do not argue the value of this for you or other members. But a site like this one only has value because of its members ! And if there isn’t a diversity of members (along with their opinions), this site won’t keep its value very long. It is part of the risk and difficulty of maintaining a site like this one.

DRC,

I as well understand the difficulty it is to balance the costs of a free site, but I am also aware of its cost. As much as I sympathize with ADMIN and the efforts he puts in into this site, when you base the survival of your site on donations, you have to make sure as well that it is well administered, donating the first round of beer when members gather around is not exactly what I would have in mind ! It his prerogative to do so ! But it is mine to donate when I want.
If ADMIN wants to put a monthly fee to balance his checkbook, that is his right. I will decide then (accordingly to the fee) if I choose to continue with my membership.

You are right there was never a banner, simply because I don't need it.

I made donation, never received the banner and just move along. It doesn't change anything for me.

Typical truckers fight something till a rule has to be made in order to do the right thing and what I mean by that instead of kicking in a few bucks wait until it has to be a monthly charge and then complain about it. I am happily making my donation again right now.

Loaders,

I understand and respect the difficult task that is soliciting donations.

But what you mention as an example is a bit different. Accounts receivable collect money that have been agreed upon previously, this is not the case here.

lowmiler88,

My argument doesn't reflect the intention of making this a pay site. I will donate again, my complaint is directed on the method used to collect donations.

I may become a regular donator or I just may become a door to door vacuum salesman (with no use for this site at that point). This site may hold tremendous value to me or I just enjoy the interaction with fellow industry members, who knows ? I will be my own judge of the value that this site holds to me, this is what is signed for !

Doesn't this site charge for Advertisements? That's how 99 percent of free sites online make their money and if your just looking to make money to pay ADMIN costs then isn't that enough?

Regarding your comments to me: I agree, that the more educated opinions with the ability to back up claims made here the better. The bottom line is, there are tangible costs. It's a simple equation: I receive true value = I thank admin with financial assistance in running the site.

Regading your comments to DRC: Are you implying that ADMIN (who may not receive enough donations to cover basic costs) should do 'more' when there is a meeting of members?? Really? Should he/she perhaps fly you from Montreal such that you can attend? What hotel would you like to stay at? - It's on ADMN!!

Wow...

I've a feeling this thread will be locked soon... I'm in the 'pool' for 1PM.

Keep well,

Mike

warex187, I was refering to the "manner" in which the requests for donations are made. Gently at first and then more and more aggressive.
Considering the small amounts of money that we're discussing, I am somewhat amazed at the resistance being shown. Yes, the threat of being cut-off seems severe, but I can't think of anything else that Admin or AR@DRC could do to solicit the required funds from active members.

No one is being "kicked out"...

You will have temporary bans - loss of status - loss of PM use and full access to the site.

We can argue about this all day long here. The fact of the matter is this scenario has been mentioned since the Spring of last year - that the site needed to reach goals each month and members on here for years needed to step up.

And now we have come to the end of the road. And to put it simply - some are upset the free highway they've driven on for years - now has a few tolls...

Mike,

No, this is not what I meant.

What I meant was, if ADMIN is paying out of his own pocket to cover any remaining cost from this site, maybe he shouldn't be paying the beer at the gatherings. But as I also said it is his prerogative, but it is mine not to donate towards it.

loaders,

It is your choice to support the site financially or the fashion in which they solicit donation. It is your opinion and I respect that. I just won't agree with it.

DRC,

You want to give privileges (PM, full access, ...) to members that donate, that’s fine ! Make it clear !

Exanple:
“ To all members,

When you donate you will be granted access to the following features of this site : PM, full access etc..

When you do not donate you will be missing out on these tools: PM, full access, etc…

Please choose your option ! “

I am fully aware that this site has operational costs, ask and you may get, threaten me and you wont !

As for your analogy, Toll roads are announced on the map and it is your choice to use them or avoid them. I am talking here about donation, not a pre-announced fee expected for the use of a given service.

In closing regarding the nature of this thread - I received a message from one of our Senior Members - who we have all turned to for help and/or advice at one point or another. His message to me was very well put and enlightening regarding this issue. I asked if I could post it and they complied with my personal request. Here it is below:

"A/R@DRC - I am sorry that you are continously the one who encounters all the complaints and bickering. I normally don't get involved with such matters but I thought I'd drop you a note and offer a different perspective here. I am very disheartened to see members who feel their "voice" is not worth anything. And what I mean by that is this:

Those who choose to be on here everyday - do so for a reason. If they weren't getting anything from it - they would not be here each and every day with all of us. Their "voice" carries an opinion - whether it be as a comment or an inquiry - to get answers to their questions. They come here every day to say something - and we all hear their voice. We read it.

If you simply remove their voice - by deleting all their future posts - they then become "invisible" - no one sees them - no one will hear them...and perhaps that is the alternative needed to get them back in the community we've all made over the years. They must feel their voice is of some worth? I certainly think highly of some members. Whether it be $3 or $5 or $25? I sure hope they agree. This is a very tough industry to be a part of. We need to stick together and work together. And we can do that by being here - it bridges the trucking gap we all face.

And if they don't feel this way and their "voice" has no value - they are better left unheard."

I joined this site in September of 2010 and found it useful quite often. I left the trucking industry in August 2011 and did not return to it until August of 2012. Being out of the industry for a year put me behind the times in terms of rates and relationships. One of the first things I did when I started back was log in to this site. There definitely is value in it and I don't have a problem donating now that I see what I get out of it.
