Good Morning everyone,

Does anyone know the actual law regarding transportation companies? I have been told that because we fall under Federal we are exempt from the holiday.

Everytime I call someone I get a different answer. We are working that day and one employee is saying we have to pay double time and a half.

I wish they would just make it a holiday for everyone or don't.

We are federally regulated therefore the provincial holiday does not apply.
I believe it is a provincial holiday in AB and SK but I was told by a MB customer that they were taking the day also.....
 
Family day is yes a Provincial Stat Day. Federal carriers are not inlcuded in this day unless the company gives this day as a stat paid holiday. However, if Federal and there is work for the employees then I would not believe they are entitled to double pay. This Family day is for the provinces of ON, AB and SK only.
 
If you conduct business cross border and file federally then you are federally regulated which means Family Day is NOT a holiday, Family Day is only a holiday for Provincially Regulated companies. Business as usual. Federally Regulated companies observe 9 holidays per year New Years, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving, Remembrance Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day). Note, that most employers take a vote regarding Remembrance Day and most decided to take the long weekend in August in lieu of Remembrance Day. I hope this helps

provincial stat holidays also.
 
I was glad to see this "topic" of discussion....

I have big issues with this "holiday" - namely calling it "Family Day". If our government was going to implement a new holiday - give it to everyone. Federal or Provincial company/business should not even factor into a "statutory" decision.

It is my understanding if your company is Federally operated - you are working "Family Day" and taking another day at a later date. If the company is Provincial - enjoy your Monday off.

A "Family Day" holiday should mean everyone is off - Mom and Dad can be together - do something with their kids - or spouses can enjoy the day together. "Family Day" certainly shouldn't mean one person gets the day off while the other family member works. In my opinion - especially where kids are concerned - this just causes more stress for the parent that has to stay home and come up with something to keep their kids occupied. This certainly is no holiday or "day off"....

If the whole intention of creating this holiday was to bring back some family values and encourage "togetherness" for a day (Canada has the least amount of statutory/earned holidays compared to other countries by the way) - how can this be done if your "other half" is back to work?

Leave it up to our good ol' "Canadian government" to screw this up and not think things through before implementing this fantastic idea....

To all those and their families that have the day off and can all be together - do something fun - have a few laughs - stay off the computer and cell phones - and just take the time to enjoy the more simpler things in life with the people who mean to the most to you.
 
SO here is a pole: If you are a Federally regulated carrier and the majority if not all of your clients are all Provincial and not open for business on Monday = no work for the local drivers this day. Should the company pay them as if it was a STAT day?
 
We are federal and working, I will probably let the "girls" (don't get mad because they are girls) take the day off and all the office staff is salary so it really doesn't matter. Our local drivers will not be paid, we are not obligated too and they are compensated very well (they actually are happy just to get a day off during the week).
