Facebook

Facebook and all social media/chat are blocked by the company I work for. Many companies do block it now. So I guess that is a no for me using it for business purposes.

We have a facebook page right now, but we don't really use it much yet.

My company does not have it blocked but we do not use if for industry purposes.

Linked In

We used Linked In with some of our customers, usually it is tied into their sales people who are requesting help. No facebook.

Facebook works well if you have a "sexy" product that people want to talk about and "share" with your friends.

Unfortunately I don't think too many people see transportation as sexy enough to warrant much attention on Facebook just yet.

LinkedIn is definitely more a more business-focused social site and there are alot of groups on their that are tailored to transportation and logistics.

Twitter has potential to be effective because you can tag different key words in conversations, like #trucking or #logistics which makes them searchable, but there are so many people talking about nothing that it's difficult to cut through all the clutter.

New fangled stuff

I wonder if these sites will not lead to our downfall as carriers.
I see most people that use these sites as being hyperactive. We already seem to have enough to work with, our telephone systems, voice mail , e- mail, load boards and such.
We would now have to scan facebook and twitter as well.

I am not sure tha extra effort would lead to any increase in profits.

We already have a site in Quebec that caters to the shippers and carriers, it also does allow a limited number of freight brokers. I beleive the only thing this site has done is that it has decreased the rates of outbound freight because now the shipper can post his freight directly to any carrier, and may the ceheapest man win philosophy hold.
When it comes to inbound freight which is harder to cater to , the shipper will call his regular carrier orv freight broker and get the job done.

Our company blocks Facebook and YouTube, but at the same time ENCOURAGES LinkedIn and Zoominfo ... though I don't like zoominfo, personally.

It's best just for increasing your network of contacts ... I can't say I do any business over it.
