Hi, I need to replace a engine of a tractor. Anyone know where should i go to find a right engine? and how much you guys think the cost will be? Parts and labor. (the tractor is in PA). Thanks a lot.

Float the unit back here for the repairs, you"ll get gouged having it done down there. As far as getting it done here, pricing will depend on what you have in it for a motor now and if you replace it with a crate engine, rebuilt or just a used engine with some miles on it.

I agree. Bring the truck back here to get it done close by. Then you can stay ontop of the work being done. I had an owner-operator with a dead transmission in eastern Ny. Against our advice, he left if there to be rebuilt. It took them 3 weeks and close to $15000. He could have had it done here for much less money and far less down time. Plus he spent hundreds travelling back and forth. A reman engine already rebuilt can be switched in a few days and you'll be back on the road earning money again. If you have your own engine rebuilt there is a chance you could save money (not guaranteed) but likely will take longer and you could be losing valuable time.

Yes, it will take 10k for buying the engine and 5k for the labor to replace it which i think it is a rip off price. Do you guys have any suggestion of a good garage that could help me with this? Our base is in Toronto. Truck down at Allentown,PA. Thanks.

Go get it yourself and bring it back here for repair to your regular mechanic.

Something like this will pay for itself in no time: Tow ★ Your ★ Own ★ HD Towing ★ Equipment

You can also call all the large towing firms and see if they have a truck in PA, you may catch a backhaul rate, we have gotten lucky a couple of times.

Nawk ruffly what do one of those units cost?

If you think $15,000 is a rip off for a good used or rebuilt installed you are in the wrong business. The average cost of a complete inframe is $25,000.00 and if you got to buy a drop in out of the crate you are looking at $30,000.00 to $40,000.00 depending on what you have for power and if your core is any good. Most truck wreckers want $7,500.00 to $15,000.00 for a decent take out and most times its only got warranty for 30 feet or 30 seconds which ever comes first.

Well, Maybe I am just a cheap guy. I made 3 phone calls about the labor cost. It is 7k, 5500, 2800 .(exact same job, same level of garage). If you think I need to pay 30k to 40k for this job, then maybe I am really not suitable for this business.

First question should be what engine is it 15000, for a Cat great price 15000 for a Mercedes not so good. Yes an inframe at Cat is out of this world but small private shops can do an equal or better job cheaper and stand behind there work.

Good Garage

Give me a few minutes.

I have one 435 Cat with over 3 million Km running Florida every week. Changed 2 injectors on two different occasions and a water pump in 2002 , a primary fuel pump in 2008 , never touched anything else.

Not so lucky with 2 merecedes 450 hp spent over 15,000 last two years trying to fix 2 leaking heads , had work done 4 times until the last guy got it right. Spent $7500.00 but it is now good. This is the first mechanic that actually knew what the problem was caused by!!!

This fellow specializes in German Wet sleeve designs but works on anything else.

The shop is in St Jerome which is far from us down here but well worth the drive. Our repair took a bit over a week because the Detroit dealer did not have all the parts in stock.

The shop is called Camion MR. tel: 450-530-3275 . They may speak English but do not count on it.

There is also another great guy in Downtown Mtl but does not work on Mercedes. They are very good and reasonably priced one of the reasons the Cat is still running so well. He also has engines there. They are Diesel Spec @ 514-932-0060

It is a peterbilt , 500hp cummings engine. Should I just go to peterbilt dealer?

In our experience, Peterbilt will cost you far, far more than any other shop around. Their markup is unrealistic on parts. We have never had our Peterbilt truck serviced there because if they charge for labour the way they charge for parts, you're in trouble. Better be very proactive. Spend time on the phone, shop around, go and talk to people in person. It is well worth the time. And when you do choose a place, don't just drop the truck off and come back when it's done. Be a pain and check in all the time to make sure everything is going as planned. Just my 2 cents.

Engine rebuild

There are several factors that come into play.

How old the truck is.
Do you want to keep the truck
Does a warranty mean anything to you.

The most important issue being the warranty. Usually they are crap, with more exceptions than anything else. The main problem is the down time while the dealer or supplier argues with head office.
I once lost a 14 month old truck for 6 weeks. they replaced the whole block with a new one but the job at the Pete dealer was shoddy and it took another 6 months to work out the mistakes.
The lost revenue and associated profits far outweighed the repair cost.
Will never do that again!!!!

If you have 100 tractors and lose one for a month , you will survive it. If you have 5 , then loss of revenue will hurt.

The job anyone will do is only as good as the mechanic. A small specialty shop that works only on engines will be able to retain a better staff. There will be less of a chance that a mechanic in training will be doing your rebuild. The work will also get done faster, putting the tractor back on the road wher it earsn revenue.
