Great if you are wanting near 100% HOS compliance.
Great if you are negotiating with insurance company.
Great if you have a pool of drivers that are adamant about compliance.
Great if your customers don't care when their freight delivers.
Bad for your drivers unless you guarantee them a daily or weekly salary.
Bad for your customers if they require timely delivers.
Bad if your drivers are like the vast majority and "crib" on their logs.
I can virtually promise you that unless you guarantee drivers a salary you will lose them as they will lose income. You will lose customers as you will be unable to compete with carriers that don't have EOBR's.
EOBR's is one of those devices that needs to be used by all or none, like trucks that are castrated/neutered. It levels the playing field.
Well electronic logs are definitely coming 2 years - 5 years who really knows. The only way it can work is if everyone is forced to use it. Right now our company is at a disadvantage because we have satelite technology and the MTO will use it in an audit I'm not sure how that is fair up against companies who don't have it but such is life. We are attempting to get a couple of drivers to try electronic logs so we can see the impact it will have on the driver miles/wages. There is no doubt that it will have some impact but what that really is no one is sure, we may find our drivers more productive because they are getting the proper amount of sleep but no one really knows. If I can get a couple of drivers to test I will share the results as we see it.
I can't help but wonder.....
throw enough regulation and restrictions at an industry to make the old guard say, "I don't want to play anymore" and leave.....and have the vacancies filled by inexperience.
Sad but true Ridley.....I know of several "old timers" that are either getting out or thinking about it....and you are right....where does it leave the industry when the senior members start to bail?
