ELD OPTIONS

If you're using sat-tracking there should be something that is integrated into it. From my experience, the larger fleets are implementing this way.

If you're a small trucking company and not using sat-track, you should be on the lookout for the apps that are available to make this work using smart phones or other wifi-enabled devices that seek locations. Those are not perfect but maybe not such a bad thing ...

If you are going with an APP make sure it is approved by the DOT. Make sure you have a plastic coated card with all the instructions to operate for whatever ELD you go with because that is what they charged us with just after we switched on our Peoplenet (couldn't find anything else wrong). They just wave us through now don't even check the logs. My other suggestion is don't wait till December because it will be a gong show if you do, all drivers know it's coming you can sell it that you will be ahead of the crowd.

Looking at going with APP that we can run on a tablet. Only problem is finding a data plan that is cost effective for cross border.

Too bad GM is not in the truck business. The easiest way to do this on the cheap is to use OnStar as the WiFi hotspot. As far as I know there are no trucks operating this or any similar option.

We use Rogers, 1g North American plan, which is sufficient to run Big Road App. most months they don't even hit 750 mb

Actually, that's not correct anymore ... all new Daimler-Benz, Paccar, and Volvo offerings do have constant connections back to HQ via their Virtual Technician engine applications ... think "ET phone home". I know Daimler-Benz piggy backs their Zonar application on that connection. I expect Paccar and Volvo either do, or will be, offering a similar package.

As for us, we've committed to the Peoplenet platform. It does everything we need and more, it's future friendly, and it's vertically integrated with our TMS.

We have been using Daimler's built in hardware for tracking and telematics for years (Zonar), and have about 6 trucks currently running e logs with the rest coming on in the next couple of months. Most of our trucks are either Freightliner or Western Star so half the hardware is already built in. For new trucks we have been ordering them either prewired for the tablet or with the tablet installed from factory.

Ladychampagne, we have been using the Big Road app for over a year now, for the most part it keeps dispatch happy they don't have to call the driver for a location update. It is a learning curve for some drivers but all are happy to use it. Only issue we have is if the driver doesn't plug the power cord in and battery goes low it slows the location update intervals.

Bubba-one, What do you use for a data plan?? We do cross border freight and I am trying to find a cost effective way to use Big Road.

is that set up to recognize the different cycles so that once the truck/driver crosses the border back into Canada it knows that he/she can operate under the 70/7 and 13 hours drive rules..?

Rogers has a Roam like you're home Plan that costs $5/day that you're in the US to a MAXIMUM charge of $50/month. I have used the Bigroad app for a few years now. I love how easy it is to use, law enforcement likes it and it's CANADIAN made.

A friend just renewed with Verizon with their 'new' north American plan.. includes 8GB of data/month which can now be used wherever for $70/month
