Drunken driver....

No respect for anything. The POS should be banned from driving for life. Let's hope the cops did not screw up the arrest and this clown gets off. I won't say what I am thinking but it sure does seem that most of the names of drunk truck drivers arrested are alike does it not?

I hate to be a devil's advocate here but....
Suffering from a severe depression can be a cause to some examples of horrific behaviour. I would like to think that there is more to the story than an ignorant drunken truck driver. Marital problems, recent family tragedy....etc. Never say never....

Hopefully the OPP don't drop the ball again like they did when the alleged but not convicted drunk truck driver crashed into the Burlington Skyway bridge...

Yes that is true, in many cases this behaviour could be caused by several factors. In this case it was 3 times the legal limit of blood alcohol in his system when he attempted to navigate the 409 and the 401. I am amazed that he got that far without killing anyone. Kudo's to the OPP who got him safely pulled over, and Kudo's to the many people who phoned in his erratic driving. There could be many reasons why someone is a drunk driver, but there are none that excuse it.

So WalterK if that driver ran over your family at 3X the legal limit but you found out he was having marital problems you would be ok with it?

I do sympathize with mental health issues, for sure. But, I can't sympathize with this particular situation. That was a horrific accident waiting to happen. I am so glad that nobody was hurt. And to Ralphthetrucker, I agree, I hope the OPP have learned their lesson and follow their rules so he can be convicted, rather than just charged!

On that note, they also should start charging people $5000 for talking and texting while driving for the fist offence and suspend their licence for 10 years for the next one. There is no excuse for this behaviour, but a substantial number of people still do it. I am not trying to excuse this guy, but I would like to know how he was able to get a truck to drive. Obviously, he was not in control of his decision making and should stay home and be put on some medication. If the transportation industry cannot stop one of their own to get drunk and get in to a truck with a load of dangerous goods, there is something fundamentally wrong that should be immediately addressed. This not only gives a black eye to all other professional drivers but also reflects poorly on our society for allowing this to happen.
Lowmiller88, no I would not be ok with it. You are trying to trivialise and simplify much bigger problem in our society. The marital problem was just used as an example. I am wandering if this guy is just a tip of an iceberg or an isolated incident. The question here is how to protect all of us from something like this happening again.
And hey, it is just a discussion....
