Remember, this was the idea of Uber in the first place. This will happen, only a matter of time.
The way I see it, the intermodal network has room to improve and will take much of the cross-country stuff over (it already has to a degree), the regional trucks will shift to driverless at some point, the technology isn't quite there yet though.

Not a Cheap Freight of the Day, but here's what I just booked and here's my rationale.
I've got 9 skids at a local supplier. They are comfort packs (imagine furnaces). In order to complete production today on a module that I want to wrap in 8 mil poly and move outside to my temporary storage area I need my HVAC tech to install 2 such comfort packs. I've got a guy that goes to town (we are outside city limits) daily to pick things up, but for this we would need him to bring straps in order for them to lower the comfort packs on to our car hauler. Also, the logistics of strapping these babies down to the open deck without damage is a challenge.
My call to Courtesy Freight was less than 2 minutes, they will pick up my 9 skids and have them here for noon. Price: $356.83 + HST. Distance: 14.9 km

TQL would rate it at $1.20 a mile which would come out to about $11.50.

come on they would offer 50 bucks on it if they where stuck. But the cost would of been 1500 US freaking crooks.

Nobody in their right mind would take this load, but everyone with their back against the wall and loan sharks circling, will do it.
Unfortunately, there is a lot more of the latter which perpetuates the cycle. Kick the can down the road until tomorrow.

Heck 3k that is a great rate for them jokers usually 80 cents a mile.
