Carney says he spoke to Trump after president threatened to block Gordie Howe bridge

@JACKBURTON I'm working an a few special projects and dont have much time for the news. Other than the headline I did not read much on Carney's call with Trump; what did Carney say that was groveling?

Any suggestions on how to deal with Trump?

His statement on the bridge was not based in reality. Rational thought for Trump seems to be a bridge he can't cross or perhaps a bridge too far ....

Canada should have immediately renamed the bridge the Donald J Trump Bridge of Peace and Prosperity and the issue would go away

In the next round of CUSMA we are cooked

Nope, but running Elbows Up ads, smear commercials, and being derisive and dismissive of him isn't working. Then they (we) always end up apologizing, and backpedalling. Look how far this tough attitude has gotten us. I can't put enough quotation marks around tough, so I won't even bother.

In the next round of CUSMA we are cooked

Nah, we're a strong independent nation!

Y'know its moments like this where I say to myself - Man I wish we had Pierre in charge it surely would have been different.

You have to be kidding…..right? Who would you rather have in charge of negotiations like CUSMA….someone who has done nothing other than be a career politician, an elected MP since the age of 25?…..or, a previous Governor of the Bank of Canada, a governor of the Bank of England, 13 years at Goldman Sachs, Chairman of the Financial Stability Board, holds a doctorate in economics from Harvard…..hmmmm? Now that’s a tough decision.

I do not think you are reading the room on this. The walls are crumbling, tumbling down. Nice to see what is happening in Washington, finally. The redactions will be gone, and the truth will make some people wonder how they ended up on the wrong side of this.

And now this! Seems his threats didn't work on this one.

The House on Wednesday voted to block President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada, with six Republicans joining the Democrats in the symbolic rebuke.

The resolution to disapprove of the national emergency Trump declared to raise tariffs on Canada, was approved 219-211. Republican Reps. Kevin Kiley of California, Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Don Bacon of Nebraska, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, Jeff Hurd of Colorado and Dan Newhouse of Washington voted against the tariffs. Rep. Jared Golden of Maine was the only Democrat to vote against the measure.

My entire take on this Canada Vs US situation is...

How do you even negotiate with someone like Trump? For all the people saying Carney is "groveling" and "elbows up is terrible" etc.

Please let me know a better strategy to negotiate with a man who changes his opinion based on a coin flip that morning. Ignores any sort of stats and when presented with evidence contradicting him, he says fake news.

Give him what he wants? Okay but what exactly is that? As someone mentioned, should we just call the bridge the Donald Trump Bridge now?

My point was that nobody took him seriously, and treated him like an imbecile, without considering the consequences. The USA, ultimately can stand alone for the most part. The countries that depend on them? Not so much. Coming out swinging against him fails time and time again and all the leaders that have taken that approach look like embarrassed buffoons at the end of the day. Just paper tigers threatening from a position of no power. And let's also remember, if they really really need our potash and oil to survive? They can just come and take it.

Sounds eerily similar to the ill fated attempts by Neville Chamberlain to appease Germany in the days leading up to WWII. We all know how that strategy worked out. No, fortunately our government has taken a very measured and logical approach to dealing with this madman. Keeping the message simple, uncomplicated and factual is the only way to weather the next 2 years. In the meanwhile, continuing to expand our trading patterns and forge new, more reliable alliances around the world.

Forging new alliances is fine, but dipping our feet in with the CCP and scrapping their tariffs entirely whilst calling for a new world order would sure piss off any US leader.. It was a bad idea from the start and China may not ever touch Taiwan as they've been threatening to take the island countless times over the last 75 years, but the US has shown they're not afraid to take military action against any country they see as a threat to their world dominance.
