We have a good collection agent in the US but they don't have any luck collecting from Freight Brokers in Canada. Can ayone recommend a rotweiller-like collection agent that has some success collecting from local deadbeats?

Gord M - you are better off taking them to court (if local). Once you do the papers the first time - it is quite straight forward. Agents can only do so much calling, emailing, mailing etc. They have their "legal" parameters they must adhere to regarding collections. With a legal filing - the delinquent is required to reply - and has 40 days to do so. If anything - you have totally inconvenienced them as now they are required to respond to your filing. And good luck to them on figuring out how to "respond" properly to the courts....

It has been my experience - trying out a couple of these "collectors" in the past - that once we switched to an internal legal route - we were much more successful. Most of the time the delinquent pays right after receiving the initial filing against them - no court required. Costs $75 or so...and your time...but well worth it.

What about out of province dead beats? Can you file against them in the province YOU are in or does if have to be filed in the province the DEADBEAT is in?

Have used the court to file against non-payers and was able to collect the invoice plus the $75.00 court fee and the postage for registered letter. It didn't have any effect on a low-life named Tom Boudreau, whom at the time was ruining the good reputation of Owen Davis Trucking from Lower Sackville, N.S.

I use the court system, but sometimes when out of province I use a collection agency. The name of the agency that I use is Financial Enforcement and Recovery known as FEAR. Their number is 416-232-1921 and ask for Manny or Chris.

When serving documents out of province, I use a process server.

You can do your claim in province, but the enforcement will have to be where they are located.

I do collections and I am also a paralegal plus I have lawyers on board if I need to go to the superior courts....if anyone wants to try me out my office number is 905 913 0356.......if I do not answer leave a message and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
