Brokers asking for our Driver's Logs to process Payment

Good Day All,

We have noticed a strange thing happening with a broker lately...

We move the load and send our invoice, but the broker is trying to hold off on paying us.

They are asking us to send a copy of our driver's logs in order to process payment.

We have of course, shut them down, as we do not provide such information to third parties.

Anyone else seeing this?
 
No I haven't seen this but its strange indeed. Maybe carriers should ask for a detailed listing of their bank accounts to confirm that they are paying their vendors. Please let me know which broker it is so I can list them as DNU.
It is Mercer. They have graciously agreed to pay us, as we outright refused to provide the logs... ;)

Was waiting time involved or on time delivery issue? that would be the only reason I could see them asking for logs. We would not provide logs either unless it was to clear up one of the issues I mentioned.

No waiting time and no delivery issues... This 'request' from them was the only thing holding payment up.
 
I've never heard of that, like the previous poster said unless it was for wait time or delivery issues I wouldn't even consider abiding to those conditions.

Just speculating here as I admit, I really have no idea why they would request a drivers logs. However, could it be a liability issue in the event of an accident. In other words, could the broker be held liable for damages resulting from knowingly contracting the services of a driver who had exceeded their allowable hours of service? I believe such case law already exists in the US. If that was the reason for their request, it does seem to be somewhat overly cautious. Who knows, maybe a case of “ once bitten, twice shy.”
 
Ok, I looked into this a little further and can report the following...

Mercer requires the carrier's driver to fill out a 17 point inspection checklist... The checklist is basically a driver's inspection of their equipment... brakes, lights, etc... Something like a circle check...

Although we filled this out and submitted it, they wanted us to also submit our driver's logs to 'prove' that our driver actually carried out an inspection, and didn't just check off the list... Not sure how getting our driver's logs helps them with that, but ok... :rolleyes:

I think you might be right @loaders with the 'once bitten, twice shy' scenario... Perhaps they had a problem with a carrier who showed up with flat tires and no running lights... o_O

We outright refused to provide the driver's logs and they seem to have accepted that.

Our invoice is now at nearly 60 days, because they used this as an excuse to initially refuse payment, and now to delay it.

Whatever happened to the days when a Bill of Lading was the only proof of delivery required?

It may also be one method to confirm that the freight was not double brokered. I have had many discussions with US brokers who complain about 'you guys' in Canada who think its ok to double broker. I explain them other ways to assist in identifying if the load is being double brokered but eventually they don't want to take the time to do it.
