I think this is a one truck operation if that is the case google Loadlink and get in touch with them about setting up an account. They are reasonable I believe it was about 150/month for a one truck operation when a buddy did it. Other than that you can go on Landstar.com getloaded there is lots of load matching services out there but the link has the Canadian market pretty well covered.

Simon, the easiest thing to do is search out reputable freight brokers and be the kind of salesperson you'd like to be if they were an actual shipper. Do a great job, follow-up and say thanks always. Do that a few hundred times and you'll realize the approach is no different with shippers themselves, except having to get past that pesky receptionist (or the lack thereof at some companies nowadays.) There's only two things that I can think of which will keep you from getting loads: #1 - taking someone for granted and doing whatever you want ...and #2 - not seeing opportunities. There's lots of loads that other companies do not want for very good reasons and mostly because of rates or because there's something that doesn't fit. You can make things work and make a trip pay if you do some checking.

Welcome to the trucking industry! The best thing to do is carve out a niche for your company and provide the best service without having your pants at your ankles. Are you general freight, flatbed or reefer carrier?

Finding loads

One of the 1st things you must do is open an account with link logistics.
All you need is the basic account without all the frills. do not go for DAT , mileage and credit reference.
You can get all of those for free and more up to date.
All the americans Carriers and brokers can see you on link anyway, and why pay to see them with only a few trucks.
For mileage, you should have a recent version of PC miler, again you do not need the frills such as Streets., you can use microsoft streets for more detail.
You or your driver should always call the consignee or shipper before getting there to do two things.
1) To see if the freight is ready and that it is what you contracted for.
2) To get directions, none of the mapping software is precise enough to give you street closures and adequate low bridge info.

As for increasing sales, other coleagues have stated it already. You must work closely with good freight brokers ( most of them are) and good carriers.

Most importantly, be professional.
Do what you say you will do and advise all customers of any delay's or issues that affect the delivery of the freight.
Work out your costs as soon as possible, it is verry difficult to do , but without it you may realize you are losing money and it will be too late to turn things around.
 
I hope you realize that finding freight, and booking it are the easy part. Getting paid in a timely fashion, paying your fuel bills, and keeping up to date with insurance, mto, and dot requirements are the real challange. You are now going to be a man of many hats. All the best to you. My personal thought is get hooked up with A) a broker who can provide freight both ways. or B) find a carrier to lease on with and an Owner/Operator.

I appreciate all your replies. It is a very good forum and everyone willing to share their knowledge.

Since I know very little about dispatching, finding a load and the custom process will be very challenging to me. I will probably start hauling the first load next week. So, a little bit worried.

As for load link, is it only for brokers to see whose truck is available and they will call you? What happens if I did not get a call? Can I call someone to arrange the loads rather than waiting?

Chances are you will have to call them and try and build a relationship then they will start to call you. Be very careful and do your due dilligence as all that glitters is not gold in this business. There are some real bad charecters out there and they will chew you up and spit you out if you are not careful. This site is a very useful tool as well as credit references.

Be sure to check them on brokers and carriers!!!
