Dovden Investments Ltd. / Brevet Canadien patent has been targeting any company that states that they track vehicles. This company appears to be linked to the American company Arrivalstar in the USA which is currently suing US Cities, Go Transit, Garmin and anyone they search for on the web that claims to have shipment tracking; including trucking companies. There are hundreds of cases in the USA to date and Canada has had 3 that have gone to court so far.

Here is an interesting article that explains the potential problem this creates for shipment tracking as we know it today:

ArrivalStar’s Jones Patent Claim Endangers Online Shipment Tracking | WebProNews

There is an enormous amount of information online regarding these "Patent Trolls" as they are called online.

I just got one of these letters, anyone else? we went to the police they said they got a lot of emails and call on them, We dont have any onboard tracking or auto generated emails, just wondering if anyone else is on the hit list for these guys

thanks

They are a patent troll looking to collect money from anyone they can. I would tell them you have no money, and respond to their letter stating how your tracking works, that it is manually entered data by dispatchers etc. I believe they are searching for any type of company on-line that has any type of shipment tracking on their website.

I Did a lot of research on them last night, They are suing every airline, city bus, shoe company, Fed Ex, US Postal , Basically anyone that offers any kind of tracking that shows an eta on the vehicle that you are waiting on for a ride or a package, or any system then sends an auto email notification. It seems a lot of company's have decided to just buy the licence, witch is sad :(

We do not use any of there patents so I think we are ok, we are small enough to stay at a manual level and pick up the phone to update customers, There is not much out there anymore that doesn't come with a tracking number from any online store, courier, trucking company, right down to tracking your flight or bus.

I think they are now putting more focus on Canada, The letter will come from Lemer & Company litigation counsel Via Fed EX
