Cheap Freight of the day

I'm surprised TQL even posts inter-Ontario loads let alone inter-Canada loads, I doubt the rep even knows that most of M1V 0G5 is a Mall or Retail Delivery.... Tailgate required more than likely.
Exactly, I never really understood this. I get if an enterprise shipper has some volumes up here and prefer to use their existing broker to move their freight. But lately its been alot of small to medium size shippers and by just offering ridiculously low rates are getting the business. We're not yet at the luxury of writing off TQL for "filler freight" from time to time but I will throw a party when we are, that's for sure.

Many shippers have a multitiered freight tendering approach. Their "tier 1" core carriers get offered rates that are reasonably good and at least on par with market. Their tier 2 carriers are the backup, in case a tier 1 cancels at the last minute or can't cover a load. And then there's tier 3, which is everyone else.. they get called into action when there's an oversupply... rates are dirt cheap and loads are posted. If no one can cover the loads for cheap they get covered by their core carriers at decent rates. It must be that way.. nobody is running for $1.00 - $1.35/ mile...although what you see on the loadboards might lead one to think otherwise.

True Story - I was on the board as a volunteer for a local organization and we needed to change out the carpet in the facility. The best price we got (beleive it or not better than local) was from Chicago. Asked for a quote and said we would take care of the shipping and customs. Since I was on the board our company couldn't do it due to conflict of interest even if it was just fuel money. I had a friend reday to move it.

Mr. Big Dollars who was a major donor for the carpet decided he wanted the shipper to handle everything even shipping/customs so I backed off. The shipper hired TQL - paid more then what I said my friend would do it for AND the carrier that actually that did it got paid less than fuel $$$$.

Honestly I don't know what to make of 'stupid' people.

Funny enough, we had a shipper mistakenly show us what TQL charges them for one of the loads we did. What got to me the most wasn't the almost 2x price charged vs what we were paid...They charged FSC on top of that .

I dealt with a customer who showed me an invoice for freight movements. The price was too good to be true but I could not come close to competing with it. Then through the conversation I found out they received an invoice at the end of the month for some other charges that she didn't really understand. I asked her to produce the invoice and it was a summary invoice for all the shipments of the month which was coded, but in the fine print I identified it as pickup, delivery charges, time on site fees, fuel, straps, bars and weigh fees. The shipper thought it was additional customs charges. So, they were getting charged a very low line haul rate which could not complete with any other carrier but the rest was charged at the end of the month and never added to the total cost of transportation. It was an eye opener for them. Pretty sneaky thing that carrier got away with.

I have seen this with some LTL carriers. And sometimes I do get why, when your doing 16 to 17 pick up/del's if your straps aren't back in the trailer, someone's gotta replace it. Its not something you deal with as much on partials or FTL's but for a true LTL carrier I get why they charge it. Do I agree with the practice? nope. Robert trans for example has a timer that sends an automated email once the driver checks in at the pick up or delivery, after 30 mins another pops up stating any additional time will be charged DET.

I've experienced the same with Robert.. when using Robert make doubly sure that you can collect those charges from your own account...Those automated timer emails have a way off quickening one's pulse and raising the old blood pressure...

Dee, didn't mean to insult you.

What I was referring to is some brokers having their salespeople hire people at low wages to dispatch freight (like $10-$12 per hour cheap) with no experience at all ... and they are usually young women, it's a fact ...

When one has no idea what they are selling, they don't know any better than to think what they are doing is OK. An experienced person I believe would let that type of freight rot on the load board.
