We have had a customer request the reefer download info from a load. Would you provide this as a free service?
Thanks!

You'd need a reefer unit new enough to even provide it 1st. The carrier would need to own the software (Either Thermo King or Carrier) to access it.
We don't own the software and we've never provided it to a customer.

An on board recorder placed on a pallet at point of shipping is a better way to go about it.

You would need to go through a dealer to have it downloaded and they will charge you so I'm assuming you would forward those charges to the client. Some carriers can do it through their own shops but if you don't have access to it talk to the dealer.

Some carriers can download the reefer data remotely at no cost, others have to go to a Thermo King or Carrier dealer and pay a fee.

If there is an issue and the reefer data suggests improper reefer temp setting or a mechanical issue then I will not charge the customer and not reimburse the carrier. The carrier can add this cost to the claim.

If there is no issue arising from the data then I will reimburse the carrier but do not usually pass on the costs to the customer depending on revenue.

If you need help interpreting the data let me know, I have been down this road many times

There was no issue with the temperatures. Customer did not set the temptracers and require proof for their records.
Trailer had to go to TK for the download. My question is... Would you charge for this?

Thanks @AgentSmith - I am leaning toward charging since we do not get much business from this shipper...

I would charge them for it since they neglected to use temp recorders. I don't mark up these costs or add an admin fee.

Do you know the cost? I'm thinking it was $300 to have it done at a reefer dealer

Was it agreed upon at the time of booking that a download would be needed?

Sounds like no, so I would definitely be charging for it.

If it was discussed upfront, it would change how I sourced a carrier or we would use our own reefer.

If you are running Reefers mainly then install Telematics. Helps you on long run.

1. Temp Reading anytime right from the computer.
2. Fuel Gauge level check, is important if you have hook-and-drop customers.
3. Remote starter
4. Tracking off course.
5. Door open and shut alarm.
6. You can set alarms as per your needs.

In the event of a claim, a reefer with download capabilities can be invaluable, for both the carrier and the shipper.
