I haven't looked yet, but does soft enforcement mean;

1) You have to have an ELD installed, it has to work, but it doesn't have to be certified?

or

2) You don't have to have one installed at all?

Seems that they are waiting for the list of certified providers before they can do anything else other than educate an make people aware.

Looks like the pandemic is being used as an excuse for the lack of clarity, despite ELD being around for a decade.

Yea, I know about the list ... I posted about it in another thread ... and I have read John G. Smith's articles.
What is not clear is whether or not an ELD, certified or not, has to be installed in the truck on June 12th.

My gut instinct is that it does not have to be installed, but there is no clarity on the subject, and my suspicion is that some over zealous MTO officer (or worse yet an OPP truck cop) out to save the world from mad truckers, is going to lay fines for no ELD being installed, and it is highly likely the charges will stand up in court.

Bear in mind, as of June 12, 2021, the ELD mandate is LAW. Enforcement agencies, even though they have espoused soft enforcement, are under no legal obligation to do so.

Typical MTO/Canadian horseshit the US has been doing it for a few years and they are 100 times the size of us but oh no we can't use data from them it has to be Canadian driven so let's set up a bloated process to get them approved and leave everyone in the dark.

Bloated process ??? That's an understatement !!!
Only 1 (one) company, a private enterprise, has been appointed (anointed?) to certify ELDs in Canada. Each device a vendor offers must be certified, and it costs $50,000.00 CDN, per device, for certification.
For example, you have 3 different tablets, each tablet has to be certified for a cost of $50,000.00 CDN EACH. $150,000.00 CDN to certify those devices for the here and now.
If changes are made to the device, it must be resubmitted for certification for an additional $50,000.00 CDN.
If the certification fails, the device has to be resubmitted for an additional $50,000.00 CDN.
And lastly, this private enterprise is under no obligation to provide timely certification.
(My personal opinion is this is one dude sitting in his basement in suburban Montreal, who is probably going to close up shop at the end of May 2022, after he has amassed considerable wealth from certification fees, with no certifications yet completed ... but that's just my opinion.)
Now I am not saying the government is crooked, or this is a scam, or this is just plain bullshit, but if it walks like a duck and it talks like a duck ...

Maybe we should get into the certification business
