April 1st is approaching yet again and with it comes another increase to the Federal Carbon Tax bringing it to $0.1073 per Litre on Diesel. How have you dealt with this added expense, have you added a carbon tax surcharge? Lumped it in with fuel surcharge? built it into rates/increases? other ideas?

Mostly lumped in with the other charges. I've gone to charging my customers a flat rate that includes the fuel surcharge and would include any carbon pricing as well, with quoted rates generally good for a specified period.

A customer asked me to review the rates and here some of the costs that are included in the rate that I thought I'd share with you.

Carbon Tax is $0.2139/litre = $0.071/km - applicable to ON, AB, MB and maybe a few more.
Ontario Road tax is $0.09/litre = $0.03/km - down from 0.14/litre thanks to Ford.
Quebec Road Tax is $0.202/litre = $0.067/km - I have no idea how QC captures Carbon Tax

From the US to Quebec City through Windsor, ON
0.071/km Carbon Tax + 0.030/km ON Tax = 0.101 X 821km in Ontario = $82.92.
0.067/km QC tax (carbon tax incl.) X 331km in QC = $22.17
Total - $105.09 in just the Canadian government fees.

The last Carbon Tax increase in April 2024 raised the levy from 0.1738 to 0.2139 which increased the costs by 0.041/litre which equates to 821km X 0.0134/km = $11.00.

Speaking of Carbon Tax ...
Has anyone been to a Brandt Peterbilt dealership lately?
There is a Carbon Tax Surcharge on their service invoices !!!
I haven't seen any other shop apply this.
What could they possibly be doing to my truck that would incur a Carbon Tax Surcharge?
If they test drive, or regen it, it's my fuel they are using, not theirs.

The heat for their shop? Another line item to add next to the environmental fee.

That's like my favorite. Shop Supplies.. when there is an itemized list of every part/product used. I've paid shop supplies on software updates. Guess they need to pay for the laptop one way or another.

In theory I should be able to claim the rebate on it, however, since it is not detailed as to what exactly the Carbon Tax Surcharge applies to, that makes it kind of difficult.
By the looks of the charge it is applied to the entire bill. I didn't know there was a Carbon Tax on human sweat. Seems further investigation is necessary !!!

humans are 65% oxygen and 18% carbon ... sooooooo technically....

HOLY F*CK !!!
I just got a call from Brandt. The poor guy was from Quebec.
As we went through the conversation he told me they only charge the Carbon Tax Surcharge on the labour. So I said, your mechanics produce carbon when they exhale, so you're charging me a Carbon Tax Surcharge on that? That left him speechless for a few seconds while he changed tactics. The next line was even funnier.
He told me it was because Brandt Peterbilt was based in Regina. I said that doesn't make any sense at all. Regina is in Saskatchewan, and Saskatchewan does not pay Carbon Tax to the federal government. He tried to tell me "Yes they do". I said you better catch up on the news brother. Several months ago Saskatchewan's Premier Moe to the feds he would not collect or pay them the Federal Carbon Tax.
Eventually he admitted he had no idea why there was a Carbon Tax Surcharge on the invoice, but promised to send the question up the food chain.
Stay tuned ... LOL

Okay ... Y'all are not going to believe this !!!
Late yesterday I got another call from Brandt Peterbilt trying to explain the Carbon Tax Surcharge.I got pretty much the same arguments as the the first guy.
HOWEVER ...
They added this caveat ... They offered to take the Carbon Tax Surcharges off my invoices, and off my account so I would not be charged them ever again !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I asked "Why just my account? Why not everyone else's too?"
The answer ... the unbelievable part ...
"Because you asked."

It's pretty rare that someone or something will leave me speechless, but that statement came awfully damned close !!!
For those of you that run Peterbilts and get service at Brandt, do with that information as you will :)

It is unfortunate, but that business strategy seems to be very pervasive throughout many industries. Think your cell phone bill is too high?… phone Bell, Rogers, whoever and claim that you’re going to cancel your service. Almost always you will get a better rate in order to maintain your account. Same with many other types of businesses. It is not right. Listen, for retired or semi retired guys like me, no problem, I have plenty of time to spare, waiting on constant hold and then bitching to some poor sap in India. But for younger folks that have families to tend to and businesses to run, they shouldn’t have to be constantly checking to see if their rate or service is the best or most economical one offered. These “add on rates” are usually nothing more than a way to increase revenue. Everyone has seen the Niagara Falls Improvement Charge that appears on almost every restaurant and hotel bill?

Brandt did not get where they are to day by being fair and honest. They will screw anyone they can any way they can think of and laugh all the way to the bank. If you haul equipment for them they pay you between 60 and 90 days and they will not pay factoring companies. They like to use truckers money as a free line of credit. I refuse to haul their cheap freight and wait 90 days to be paid. Only time i haul for them is when they are stuck for a truck and i put the boots to them on the rate.
