WSIB Increase?

Did anyone else get letters last week from WSIB showing their current premium rate and then a projected rate? Our projected rate is showing a 9 X increase? I got on the phone this morning with a CSR there who explained to me this is an expected increase over the next 5 years. She said that 2020 it will be 5%, then 2021 10% then 2022 15%. They have our NAICS code as 488519, which includes freight brokers. We are strictly an office space, we do however outsource warehousing, etc, but non of our employees are there. Correct me if I am wrong but didn't the National Transportation Brokers Association fight the WSIB putting brokers in the same category of Warehouses, asset based carriers, ground passenger, etc, years ago and won? Is this something we need to get together on again?

Yes, we did in 2008 resulting in freight brokers being classified in their own rate group as opposed to being lumped in with general trucking operations. Prior to that, freight brokers were an optional classification where you could elect not to participate. After some seriously lobbying efforts on the part of the OTA, WSIB decided to put brokers into general trucking in response to the OTA complaints. Their argument was they wanted to “level the playing field” when actually they wanted to “expand the league” and increase the pool of total premiums. I have not heard of the increases mentioned above, but I don’t follow it as closely as I once did. Used to be freight brokers were 958-03 rate group. The amendment was 4592-003.

NEER (New Experimental Experience Rating) is not new and has been around for more than 10 years. In January 2020 they are restructuring WSIB and the experience rating programs will be amalgamated into the program. NEER, MAP and CAD7 will wind down and your rate will include your experience rating with a base price set by your NAICS code. It is important that you review your Premium Rate Summary Statement that was sent out Sept 24 and confirm that your NAICS code matches your business description. On that form you will see your2020 rate based on your NAICS code and your projected based on your experience.

My WSIB rate decreased.. but I do know they are changing the ratings and classifications for Transportation
