Customer: "I shipped the wrong part to a customer. Can I get a "deal" on the return to me so I can ship out the correct part?"

Dispatch: "hmmm...I don't see the shipment going out...when did you ship it?"

Customer: "Oh...I didn't ship it with you".....

Dispatch: "Oh...OK...but you want us to give you a "deal"?

Customer: "Yes"

They probably called the guys who moved it first asking for "a deal" and didn't like the answer. The customer is just trying to minimize the pain of his mistake that he will have to admit to his boss.
I agree with Freight Broker, this is an opportunity to get a new customer or solidify the relationship.
We don't blink when we buy a customer lunch or take them golfing and spend a bunch of dough with no guarantee of benefit. Eat the margin and maybe some more and make buddy's day. You will be the winner in the long run.

Nope, and make sure remind him that "we all make mistakes sometimes" He might even let you tack on something to the next order to make up for your loss.
